The God Complex/The Name of the Doctor
gnimaerd :
#that’s it #that’s the show #(or at least it would be IF THE PATTERNOSTER GANG HAD THEIR OWN SPIN OFF)
You know what they say, there’s a first time for everything. - And a last time.
30 Days of The Ponds | Day 22 Whatever Tickles Your Fancy - Moments when Amy fell in love with Rory all over again
Madame Vastra and The Crimson Horror - Fanmade End Credits
If ever anyone doubts that the Paternoster Gang deserve their own spin-off, show them this.
This is utterly brilliant, I’m so glad you made a second one :D
Fairly unproblematic episode mostly, gender-wise. Passed Bechdel test. Clara did cool stuff. I didn’t personally think much of it, although I loved Warwick Davis as Porridge. The children were annoying, as is children’s wont.
And then…the end of the episode. The very end. The Doctor’s talking about Clara being a mystery and an enigma (and already I was tired by his treating her as a puzzle to be solved, rather than a person in her own right), and then he says “in a too tight skirt”. A too. Tight. Skirt.
There are some moments when not just my love of Doctor Who as a show, but my love for the Doctor as a character just plummet and, as when he called Clara a “bird” dismissively back in the Christmas Special, that was one of them. SKIRTS TOO TIGHT? Firstly: Clara doesn’t wear tight skirts. Secondly: TOO tight? That’s simultaneously critical and salacious: playing into old old tropes wherein men sexually objectify women, and blame the women for their own objectification. He might be leering at a woman probably about a thousand years younger than him, but hey! If she WILL wear too tight skirts…
And….that’s what Clara is to the Doctor. A puzzle, in a tight skirt. She’s sexy and mysterious. She is….WOMAN. Fuck you, Moffat. (I know Gaiman wrote the ep., but that line felt very Moffat-y, especially as it was the lead to next week’s series finale.) Fuck you. The Doctor should be interested in his companions because they’re people, because they’re interesting as people, not because they’re flirty, mysterious and tight-skirted. He’s being reduced to a millennium-old lech, and it’s making Doctor Who…no longer fun.
Oh, I hadn’t heard the line correctly - I thought he said “a mystery wrapped in a enigma, squeezed into this girl… Which is a little bit too tight”. But the innuendo face followed by the offended/angry face made me sigh plenty enough. Knowing what the actual line is just makes it worse :(
