Scott’s not really sure what’s happening when Derek comes out of nowhere to knock Ethan into the ground, then turns to look at him and says flatly, “Don’t you have an English paper due tomorrow?”

Scott frowns, gazing from the temporarily unconscious alpha to Derek’s expectant face. He rubs at the cut on his cheek.

“How do you even know that?” he wonders, pushing himself off from the abandoned factory’s wall. Derek starts, like he wasn’t expecting the question, and looks away. Scott stares at him; even in the poor lighting he can see the red begin to color Derek’s ears.

Aiden comes in through the window and there’s not a lot of time to dwell on it after that.

It’s a new year and a new leaf and a new Scott, and he read the book, he really did, but somehow Scott still finds himself trying to race the clock as he scribbles the last few pages of his paper before class starts. He ignores Stiles’ cheerful greeting, because if he can just finish his point about Desdemona and her—

Ms. Blake drops her hand on Scott’s shoulder and squeezes gently. He lifts his head, opens his mouth to apologize, but then she just smiles at him like she thinks he’s something precious and it makes him feel anxious.

“Don’t worry, Scott,” she murmurs, dipping her head, “You can turn it in tomorrow. I know you were…” She pauses, then whispers, “busy last night.”

Scott glances at Stiles, who shrugs and goes back to his phone. He frowns at Ms. Blake.

“How do you…”

The lighting isn’t poor — the room is bright, warm, welcoming — and Scott can clearly see the pretty pink begin to dust the tips of Ms. Blake’s ears and run along her cheeks.

The bell rings and she leaves him, but Scott can’t stop staring at the woman.

Somehow, even with the regular werewolf problems and the potential End of Days, this is the weirdest moment of Scott McCall’s junior year.
